Two new Esports & Leadership Camps Announced for New York + First Weeks Learning from Overwatch League 2020 + Pokimane Donates 50k to Collegiate Esports + The Worlds Oldest Man & How Flyquest is Redefining Themselves Through Purpose.
ESPORTS CAMPS
Esports Camps return to St. Thomas Aquinas College. STAC has one of the premier gaming centers on the east coast and offers a perfect, inside look into college esports.
We have gone live with our Overwatch Camp & League of Legends Camp with one more week of camp likely to be added very soon.
INDUSTRY
It’s a whole new frontier for the Overwatch League, which began its third season on Feb. 8. This year, the league has changed to a global homestand model with games in every city. Dallas and New York hosted the first eight matches this past weekend.
It will be fun to see what the splits are on the W-L record for home and away matches over the first few months of OWL. Our prediction? Home teams will have a slight boost.
COLLEGIATE
Popular gaming personality Pokimane has donated $50,000 to the University of California, Irvine for student scholarships in its esports program. An initial $25,000 gift this year will be combined with the remaining $25,000 in 2021 to create an endowment that will fund tuition and fees for gamers selected by UCI Esports.
UCI continues to set the bar for innovation on the college esports front. We're proud to be a camp operating partner of UCI and see it's continued influence in the space.
CROSSOVER
Chitetsu Watanabe turns 113 next month, but he got an early birthday present from Guinness World Records, which confirmed that he is the world's oldest living man.
He was presented with a certificate on Wednesday at the nursing home where he lives in Niigata, Japan -- he's 112 Years, 344 days old, according to Guinness.
We couldn't not include this wisdom for our readers this week.
ICYMI
Amidst the typical weekend esports scene outside the LCS studios, FlyQuest’s booth stands out. There you’ll find fans, players, and even the CEO practicing the Japanese art of flower arrangement known as ikebana. It’s just one element of a new team initiative dubbed “go green,” which is the esports club’s attempt to use its platform to bring attention to larger issues. “It represents so much of what is important to us,” says FlyQuest CEO Tricia “megumixbear” Sugita.
Esports Camps are designed to bring young players together to learn new skills, train as a team and grow the community. We believe that an interactive environment focusing on the individual, team, competition, personal growth, community and FUN are vital to player and individual advancement.
We are running esports camps with some of the best venues, teams, coaches and events around North America. As new dates and locations become available, signup to be the first to know.
"Our son William absolutely loved it and gained more confidence with his gaming during this week of camp. He really enjoyed spending time with people who had the same level of interest that he has for esports. It also opened his and our eyes to what is involved in playing and/or training for esports."
"I had a super time at the Esports Camp! Lovely to meet so many people IRL, and geek out with our next generation of leaders and changers in the space."
"The gaming was great because I had people to play with and I got to try new things. Our coach(Sidney) was nice and a good coach and got along with everyone and the overnight stay part was ok"
"Apparently his coach helped him with a mistake ritual. I am so thankful as this will help the screaming decrease. Ha! He improved high ground re-takes, game sense and side jumps and I have no idea what any of that means. So thank you!"
"I really improved on my team communication skills. This was my first real competitive experience, and I think it was a lot of fun, and very valuable. I really enjoyed working as a team, and cooperating with others to reach our goal."
"My takeaway from this camp was how health and other activities play a role into video games. I also loved learning from the Cavs coach and what his daily routine is like."
"I learned how to work with my overwatch team much better than I could have without camp."
"This was awesome everybody was very nice and they helped me understand the game better"
"Rambo was very knowledgeable about things you can do outside of the game like stretches and your mindset, not just in the game. My overall gameplay became better because of that."
